One of the most popular parts of Africanhiphop.com this year has been the radio section. At the beginning of June, the radio show will relaunch in a new format and a freshly designed website!

Started out in the late nineties, our regular mixes and radioshows have given a look into the scenes of various countries. From the first Rumba-Kali mixtapes in 1995/6 to the Senegal special in 1999, they exposed people worldwide to the hip hop explosion happening around the continent.

Time for an upgrade! In 2004 we decided to take it to a next level by bringing in hosted shows, recorded in the Vpro radio studios in Holland. We also got interview contributions from Lee, host of the popular Harambee show at YFM (South Africa) which features the weekly African hip hop wire in which she talks to emcees around the continent.
From there came the idea to create one monthly show out of contributions by radio deejays in different countries. Behind the scenes we have been working to make this happen, with help from Kennisland/Digitale Pioniers, a Dutch fund supporting innovative web projects.

The result is Africanhiphopradio.com, a brand new website with a fresh design which will see the light in early June. The first edition will have contributions by hip hop radio deejays from from a.o. Nigeria, Cape Verde and Angola. We will play a lot of tunes that have been available only locally, often on promo cd-r's and tapes. But we also have an ear to the online community as we will play tunes that you have e-mailed or sent to our postal address:

The website will also allow emcees to upload their tracks in mp3 format so that we can include them directly in the stream. For now you can e-mail mp3's to mp3@africanhiphop.com.
This is African hip hop radio, so we will play tunes by African & diaspora emcees around the world as well as other tracks that have a clear relevance to the Motherland. For example: in our upcoming show we have tunes from Senegal, Ghana, Nigeria, Congo, an Angolan mc abroad, etc. but also a Brazilian group who describe their style as Afro hip-hop and a Dutch group called the Pan Africans.

Also read the story just below about the launch party on the 29th of May!
